The Supreme Court in earlier time took a narrow view of gun rights and saw the 2nd Amendment as referring to the right of the people to form militias.

The Supreme Court of today is regressing to the Supreme Court before the presidency of FDR. After the Civil War, the court took a very narrow view of the Civil Rights Act of 1871 and overturned it in 1883. Then, it ruled in favor Plessy, which said that separate but equal was constitutional, buttressing segregation. It ruled in favor of sterilization laws in 1927.

It was mostly pro-business and ruled against labor unions consistently. Free speech rights were not even considered until the 1930s. At the state level, interracial marriages were banned, homosexuality was outlawed, contraception was banned, and there was no right to privacy. Criminal defendants had no right to an attorney and confessions were often forcibly coerced.

Miranda rights came much later, It was not until the late 1950s and beyond that these issues were addressed and rights of individuals were expanded, establishing a right to privacy. The court is now hell bent on undoing what the Warren court did and reverting back to this era. Clarence Thomas has already argued for doing so. The only area where the current court differs from earlier times is the expansion of gun rights.
