It is time to put an end to the outdated, environmentally irresponsible tradition of rattlesnake roundups in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania is among only a few states nationwide that still observes a barbaric tradition known as the rattlesnake roundup. These yearly events encourage local citizens to hunt down as many rattlesnakes as they can find in the wild, in exchange for trophies and cash prizes.
Historically, the captured snakes were then killed for their meat or skins, although this is no longer practiced in Pennsylvania. Today, according to the sponsors of these events, the captured snakes are put on display for public viewing, and then, supposedly, returned to the wild. Proponents of these events defend their position by claiming that “no snakes harmed or killed” at these events, but this does not tell the whole story. Wildlife studies have consistently shown that wild animals, including snakes, undergo severe stress when captured and handled by humans, causing many of these animals to sicken and die, or lose their ability to reproduce after being returned to the wild.
