Dallas is bringing back electric scooters, but how safe are they? | Opinion
the National Transportation Safety Board — the same group that investigates plane crashes, train derailments and other major transportation accidents in the United States — raised serious concerns about the lack of uniform coding for e-scooter and e-bike crashes, fatalities and injuries.
Think about what that means locally. As the city’s three approved vendors prepare to deposit up to 1,500 e-scooters and e-bikes on Dallas city streets in the next week, the best transportation experts in the country are saying there’s just not very good data to determine how safe they are.City of Dallas spokeswoman Jennifer Brown said the city is aware that crash data for e-scooters and e-bikes is sometimes under-reported, just as it is with pedestrians and bicyclists.
Among those are limits on night-time riding, lower maximum speeds in high-activity areas, a requirement of providers to place the vehicles in underserved neighborhoods and better tracking of where they are left.
