After 26 years as mayor of Carmel, Jim Brainard announced Tuesday that he will not seek reelection in 2023.

Brainard was first elected mayor of Carmel in 1995. He will remain in office through the end of 2023, but the decision opens up the field in the race for Carmel's mayor next year, which could shape the city for years to come. Outside of who will be Brainard's successor, the other major question surrounding the announcement Tuesday is: what will Brainard do next?Brainard said in his address to local media and community members Tuesday that he would seek new opportunities in the private sector.
"I've often been asked to offer advice on matters of city design, development, sustainability and livability and I look forward to possibly helping other communities and business sectors learn from Carmel's success," he said.
