“I’m very hopeful that we can find a way to come up with a collaborative process that will work for everybody,” said Chad Carey, who owns and operates several bars and a music venue along the Strip. “But I think what you see right now is the result of good faith evaporating — a lack of trust on this process evaporating.
As more traffic was pushed into residential areas — and more vehicles lined their streets — homeowners have described patrons having sex, urinating and defecating in yards, throwing trash onto their property and blocking their driveways. They say they hear gunshots more often and worry about fights, drunken drivers and whether emergency vehicles will be able to access streets lined with cars. Some also lose sleep as loud music continues into the wee hours.
Some residents are middle-class families who have lived in Tobin Hill for generations. Others are newcomers, young professionals and affluent empty-nesters eager to live a short walk from the restaurants, bars and shops. “There is no such thing as a residential street. These streets belong to everyone,” he said at a Sept. 24 meeting. “We should all be able to use them.”
The combination of bar patrons’ unruly behavior, noise and parking problems added up to more than some residents could stomach.Carmela Vasquez, who said her family has lived in the neighborhood for more than 60 years, usually leaves early in the morning to run errands and go to appointments. If she tries to go at night, she said, she’s sometimes penned in by visitors’ cars.
Crews are reconstructing the street, widening the sidewalks, moving power poles, upgrading utilities, making drainage improvements, and adding bicycle lanes, about 40 parking spaces, lighting and trees.
