Taking on a well-established Republican incumbent with a lot of money in the bank in a congressional district intended to elect Republicans might seem like a thankless task, but a pair of Democrats are eager to try.

a 14-year incumbent whose congressional district was drawn to include Lorain County starting next year.

If elected, Heberling says he would work to increase the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, ensure pay equity for women, fight for tax policies to make corporations pay their fair share, give the middle class a tax cut and lower taxes on Ohio small businesses. He also says he would oppose unfair trade agreements and revitalize Ohio’s manufacturing industries to succeed in the 21st century economy. He’d also like to legalize marijuana and expand Medicare by lowering its eligibility age.

Swartz says he’s running for Congress because he believes “we no longer have a functioning democracy,” and members of Congress discount feedback from their constituents “because of the wall of money protecting them in their gerrymandered districts.” If he’s elected, Swartz says he would initiate legislation to change the House of Representatives’ two-year terms to four-year terms and limit representatives to two terms.
