Tornado warnings issued in N.J. as intense thunderstorms rip across state
Earlier Monday, the weather service forecast noted that winds could be strongest in northwest New Jersey “possibly giving this area the best chance of a tornadic storm.”
It also mentioned the possibility of thunderstorm cells in South Jersey “forming to the west and coalescing into a line which will have significant wind damage potential, along with heavy rain, hail and perhaps even an embedded tornado as well.” Winds gusts of up to 70 mph were expected along with widespread totals of 1 to 2 inches of rain and possibly large hail. The weather service said 3 to 5 inches were possible where the strongest storms form.
Flood watches went into effect at 2 p.m. for Middlesex, Mercer, Hunterdon, Morris, Warren and Sussex counties. “We are expecting severe weather across our state today, with the possibility of thunderstorms and flash floods in certain areas,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a tweet late Monday morning. “Please drive with caution, monitor local weather updates, and stay safe.”
