“People are fascinated when a piece of history underneath the beach becomes visible,” said one marine archaeologist.
Visitors surround an old shipwreck on the beach at Stone Harbor Point. Some local historians believe the ship the parts belong to — which washed back up in December 2018 — dates back to the late 1800s.The biting December winds five years ago didn’t stop people’s curiosities.
“I was curious and excited to see a piece of history that the ocean decided to uncover,” said Susan Allen, a photographer who visited the area at the end of 2018 andNow, much of the wreck is covered in sand — a notable difference from how it looked on her first visit. but does not oversee wrecks — nor the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s State Historic Preservation Office have additional specifics on the Stone Harbor shipwreck found in 2018.
