Beanie Babies get the biopic treatment in TheBeanieBubble, and we chat with directors Kristin Gore and Damian Kulash of okgo about their approach to the story and thoughts on the American dream:
Beanie Babies finally get their own biopic in The Beanie Bubble, which arrives in select theaters on July 21 before streaming on Apple TV the following week. But rather than a straightforward recounting of the events that led to a global plushie craze, the new movie jumps back and forth in time as it highlights the women who helped Ty Warner build his empire.
The financial story is interesting and totally absurd. These little stuffed beanbag animals got treated as investment vehicles, which is wild and weird, and that's fun to learn about. Damian Kulash: The fact that people went bananas for these and thought that it was a good idea to invest your college savings in them? That's surface-level crazy, the type of thing where you go, "Isn't that crazy?" But you called it the backdrop to these other stories, and what's so fascinating to me is that it's really the same kind of mistake that we make on an everyday level.
Damian, as someone who went to my fair share of OK Go concerts in my youth, it is a very interesting leap to see you now directing a feature-length film. What was that journey like for you? What brought you to this side of the creative world? Damian Kulash: If OK Go tried to make a narrative film, it would not have any heart or soul to it whatsoever. I shouldn't say that, but it would be very different than this. This was a wonderful way for us to marry our skillsets.
Kristin Gore: We super lucked out with the cast. They're all incredible acting powerhouses and great humans and really connected with their characters, so it was a collaborative joy to bring it to life with them. Very important question. Did you each have a Beanie baby that was your favorite while working on the movie? Which would you bet your college savings on?
