A Texas National Guard member assigned to security at the state's border died while on duty Tuesday, a new report said.
The member died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound from an M4 carbine to the head in Eagle Pass, Texas, at around 8:20 a.m., according to a document obtained by the Army Times.
"Cecilia and I are deeply saddened to hear of the tragic loss of a soldier with the Texas National Guard. Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the soldier," the governor said."Texas Rangers are leading the investigation, as the Texas National Guard and Texas Department of Public Safety coordinate with local law enforcement."
Beto O'Rourke, the Democratic candidate for governor, wrote on Twitter expressing his regret at hearing of the soldier's death.
