Underneath an inconspicuous looking site on the far side of the moon, SMU researchers think there may be a piece of granite spanning over 30 miles. This...
began to transmit the first high-resolution images of Compton-Belkovich. Jolliff and others saw a sunken area surrounded by steep domelike structures that looked a lot like a crater formed by a volcano. Most lunar volcanoes now look like large plains of smooth lava, but Compton-Belkovich has sharper rock formations that suggest thicker lava and a different geological history, making it a puzzling site.
“Granite systems are basically the frozen magma system that never erupted out of a volcano,” Siegler said. As the magma cools, rounded bubbles of granite form. Over time, many of those bubbles can cluster together to form large masses. These masses can form on Earth, as well. When erosion uncovers parts of the granite bubbles, we get features like Half Dome in Yosemite and Enchanted Rock in Texas.
Siegler and his team estimated a granite body over 30 miles across would be needed to explain the amount of heat they were seeing. This is much more granite than has ever been observed on the moon.
