UIW put together a balanced offensive attack with 347 yards through the air and another 203 on the ground. Defensively, the Cardinals slowed a dynamic McNeese rushing attack and prevented running back Deonta McMahon from stringing together his fourth consecutive 100-yard game. “He’s amazing,” Kinne said. “He really is. Unbelievable kid. He prepares like a champion, he goes out there and plays like a champion. I couldn’t be any more happier for him.”
A muffed punt extended a McNeese drive midway through the second quarter and set the Cowboys up with first down at the UIW 42-yard-line. The Cowboys capitalized on the special teams blunder as McMahon punched in a 3-yard touchdown run to cut the Cardinals’ lead to 14-10 with fewer than three minutes left in the first half.
McNeese received the kick to start the second half and came away with three points on a 47-yard field goal by Garrison Smith.
