Veteran quarterback has found a home after stops at USC, Georgia and West Viriginia

JT Daniels has come a long from Mater Dei to find himself at Rice some six years and four schools later. The more Mike Bloomgren listened to JT Daniels, the more he became convinced that he could someday be a “generational and elite” quarterback.Daniels did not sound like a typical teenager. Not by the way he could read a defense and change protections. Not when Bloomgren, then the offensive coordinator at Stanford, would lay out scenarios –“I’m going to solve it this way.

Bloomgren first learned of Daniels from a conversation with Dave Money, the offensive coordinator at Mater Dei, a renowned California high school football factory that has produced quarterbacks Matt Leinart, Matt Barkley and Colt Brennan. Then Daniels attended a summer camp at Stanford prior to his freshman year.“The way he can really see things in a pre-snap process is just next level and it’s always been that way,” Bloomgren said.

Next came school No. 3: Daniels landed in West Virginia in 2022, reuniting with former USC offensive coordinator Graham Harrell. Daniels started 10 games for the Mountaineers last season, throwing for 2,107 yards and 13 touchdowns before he decided to enter the transfer portal again. “For JT he reached a point … what he said to me was ‘I need to go to a pro-style system, back to where I’ve been best,’” Bloomgren said. “We were able to show him exactly what we would do in this West Coast offense. He seemed excited coming out of those meetings.”

“What do we all need?” Bloomgren said. “We need our quarterback to stay healthy. That helps the Rice Owls. That’s what he needs. He needs a season of being upright and being able to remain productive to meet his goals. If he can do that, with the arm talent and other things associated with the way he will blow everyone away talking football, if he can throw for 75 to 80 percent, I’m not sure he can’t jump right back into that conversation of being a top draft pick again.
