As Canada continues to target net\u002Dzero carbon emissions, it will spend tens of millions of dollars on SMR development in Saskatchewan.

“Delivering clean, reliable and affordable electricity will look different in every region of Canada,” said Wilkinson. “That is why the Government of Canada is committing up to $74 million to explore the potential for small modular reactors in Saskatchewan to provide abundant non-emitting power, drive economic growth and create good jobs throughout Saskatchewan.”

Last September, SaskPower announced that Saskatchewan’s first SMR could be located in either the Estevan or Elbow areas. SaskPower officials said they were studying the two locations because they would meet the needs of supporting an SMR. The locations are close to a suitable body of water, have sufficient transmission and road infrastructure and could sustain a sizable workforce.

SaskPower said it intends to select one of the two areas by the end of 2024 for further evaluation. A final decision on approving an SMR, however, is not expected to happen until 2029. Officials have said early planning needs to happen beforehand to ensure the province meets regulations. The Elbow site is located next to Lake Diefenbaker, which is also subject to a proposed $4 billion irrigation project. Officials have said the water there would be able to support the irrigation project and the SMR. The Estevan study area includes Grant Devine Lake, Boundary Dam Reservoir and Rafferty Reservoir. There was an error, please provide a valid email address.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
