Saskatchewan\u0027s government and SaskPower should try harder to be constructive in finding solutions to produce cleaner electricity.
In my own research, I have found that we can reduce pollution from the Canadian electricity sector by about 80 per cent for less than one cent per killowatt-hour. The last 20 per cent of pollution reduction is more expensive to clean up.
Third, SaskPower does not need to reach zero pollution by 2035. These regulations are better framed as closer-to-zero-by-2035, and near-zero-by-2045, rather than net-zero by 2035. Premier Moe has stated that the province can meet “net-zero” by 2050. To help provinces comply with the regulations the Canadian government is offering funding. The Canadian Climate Institute estimates that Saskatchewan could receive $2.6 billion or more in federal funding in the next 10 to 15 years to help build a clean electricity future. Is this funding enough?
The motivation for these regulations should be clear to all of us now. As we burn gasoline, diesel, natural gas and coal, we release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The more CO2 we release, the more these gases blanket our atmosphere.
