Chris Combs, aerospace program coordinator in UTSA’s mechanical engineering department, predicts the NASA-SpaceX partnership will influence generations of engineers and scientists.Mihir Desai was understandably disappointed when NASA’s much-anticipated launch of the Artemis I mission, powered by its newest rocket, was scrubbed hours before liftoff on Aug. 29. He would be unable to attend the next launch attempt on Sept. 3.
SwRI, a nonprofit research provider, has been a longtime NASA contractor, and engineers there hope to continue working with the space agency on scientific missions. It has 365 employees in the space department in its San Antonio headquarters and 100 in a satellite office in Boulder, Colo.
“Right now, our ability to predict these radiation storms is very primitive. It’s almost like we have two weather stations in the Pacific Ocean and we’re trying to predict the weather in New York,” Desai said. “Eventually, we want to be able to build up our science and space-monitoring capabilities so that we could make these predictions of potential hazards.”Whether NASA gets the SLS rocket off the launch pad this month or next, Astroport Space Technologies Inc.
In the wake of the first SLS launch, CAMEE researchers recently got word that they received $2 million in NASA grants to continue research for the Artemis program through October 2024. They plan to use the funding to expand their research into robotic exploration of the moon.
