Dear Pay Dirt: I just told him about my friend who surprised her young daughter with Taylor Swift tickets for this weekend.
My husband and I both grew up poor. And unfortunately, we had the kind of parents who, instead of shielding us from it, never let us forget that we and our siblings were a burden. We both endured housing and food insecurity as children, but then the first people in our families to go to college. Now my husband has some serious baggage around “rich people.”
He gets really grumpy about any sign of people having material wealth, especially if they are generationally wealthy. Anyone who drives a nice car, went to private school, doesn’t have student loans, got to go to summer camp as a kid, etc., sends him into a sullen weird mood. For example, I just told him about my friend who surprised her young daughter with Taylor Swift tickets for this weekend and showed him a cute video of her jumping with joy at the news.
I wish I could just roll with this, but it’s been getting on my nerves more and more. I get it—my parents gave me hell every time I needed $5 for the school field trip—but it would just feel gross, ungenerous, and petty to carry that hurt forward over a little girl getting excited to go to a concert. Especially because we are those people now too. I’m not bitter because someone we know can afford to send their kids to summer camp.
