Re: “1 year post-Roe: Texas abortion bans among nation’s strictest — Doctors face unclear exceptions, forced to ask legal questions,” June 24 news story. This...

The story states that since the ruling, 25 states have banned abortions or tightened restrictions. This has caused many physicians either to limit their practices to exclude pregnancy care, move out of state or stop practicing medicine. As a result women with normal pregnancies often have difficulty accessing care. Those whose pregnancies cannot reach a normal conclusion are prevented from receiving quality care without travel and/or fear of vigilante justice.

This is not a matter of science, but rather of philosophy and faith. As a consequence, since then, respect and admiration for the court has fallen to its lowest level ever, as Americans, especially women, rail against the loss of control over their own reproductive rights. I support anyone’s belief that, contrary to the biblical text, once an egg is fertilized it should not be tampered with, but that is not mine. Having spent 20 years working in medical research, I look to brain development at approximately 24 weeks.

Finally, there is no monolithic “Judeo-Christian” approach to the question of when a human life begins. Christian teaching on this question has varied across time and sect. Jewish law, even in its strictest application, requires taking the health of the mother into account.
