Commissioner J.J. Koch and his opponent Andrew Sommerman spoke with The Dallas Morning News about their thoughts and potential solutions to the case backlog in Dallas criminal courts.
Commissioner J.J. Koch, a former prosecutor and civil litigation attorney, faces Democratic personal injury attorney Andrew Sommerman as he fights for a second term in a newly redistricted map. This district will be more blue than when Koch won in 2018 and went on to become the sole Republican on the commissioners’ dais.
Koch, 43, and Price have said some district criminal judges aren’t working enough to address cases in a timely manner. Most of a district judge’s total annual salary is paid by the state, but Dallas County contributes $18,000. Koch advocated for the county to hold $20.23 of the supplement salary as a warning for future potential ramifications if the backlog is not reduced, but the 2023 budget passed without the restriction.
