’s friendship began just as you might expect—as distant admirers of each other’s work. Wood is best known for her paintings featuring Giorgio de Chirico–esque non-sequiturs of everyday objects and textures—buffed leather car seats, discarded keys, chintzy miniature swans and dogs—melded together with a surreal and gently macabre wit.
Released yesterday, “Both” arrives as the first single from Wood’s upcoming debut album, set to drop in August, and stars the actor and modellounging around her apartment as she cycles through the various emotional states induced by an unreliable lover. Was it hard for Wood, given the strength of her preexisting aesthetic sensibilities, to hand over the reins for the visuals to someone else? “Yes, but I have no choice,” she says. “I tried to make video art in art school and it never worked.
The first order of the day was to find a suitable muse who could act as a proxy, of sorts, for Wood. Nef was in London at the time, filming Greta Gerwig’sand on a rare day off, the trio met up to shoot. “I’ve worked with Hari in lots of different ways over the years, and I just knew that she would get it,” Dunham explains. “Instead of having to push to understand the emotions of the video, they would just be right there.
