Courteney Cox says her experiences on the set of ScreamMovie helped her prepare for her new role in the horror-comedy show ShiningVale.
Courteney Cox describes how her work on Scream helped her prepare for her starring role in the new horror-comedy series Shining Vale. Created by Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan, Shining Vale looks to be a fresh take on the haunted house trope with Cox starring alongside Greg Kinnear as Pat and Terry, a couple who move to the country to reignite their marriage and Pat’s writing career. While there, the past atrocities committed in their new house begin to haunt them.
Cox rose to fame as Monica Geller on Friends, before taking on the role of reporter Gale Weathers in Wes Craven’s Scream franchise. Appearing in the original trilogy from 1996 to 2000, Cox eventually reprised the role for both Scream 4 and Scream 5. A significant departure from the light-hearted comedic exploits of Monica, Scream saw Cox facing off against the vicious Ghostface on multiple occasions and went on to become one of the most profitable horror franchises of all time.
“I’ve had experience with people jumping out and things like that. [Co-creator] Jeff Astrof was open to hearing my thoughts, like I would say ‘This would never happen in a horror film.’ All the training I had on Scream and doing Friends set the perfect tone for me to be able to play this, and then add drama to it. It was a nice balance.”
With the first two episodes now released, it looks as if Cox’s experience has brought some of the original magic from Scream to Shining Vale. Currently sitting at a respectable 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, many critics have highlighted the show's successful genre mash-up. This is remarkably similar to the approach that made the first Scream film such a success and could be a result of Cox’s presence during production.
What remains to be seen is if the rest of Shining Vale continues with this upward trajectory. As the Scream franchise continued, both its box-office returns and critical reception declined, as people began to tire of its derivative approach. With the advent of a new age of horror television, as shows like Midnight Mass have drawn acclaim and massive viewership, hopefully Shining Vale utilizes an experienced lead such as Cox to deliver the cross-genre TV experience Scream fans are looking for.
