Charlie Cox jokes about the only thing that could truly break up Daredevil and his on-again, off-again love interest Elektra.
The romance between the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, Matt Murdock, and the assassin, Elektra Natchios is one of comics’ most enduring, albeit toxic, love stories. In 2003, the characters were brought to the big screen courtesy of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner. And in 2016, Elodie Yung’s Elektra appears during Netflix’s Daredevil season 2, starring Cox as its titular vigilante.
Elektra is introduced as an assassin who, like Matt, trained under Stick before joining the ancient organization, Chaste. She fell in love with Matt during a mission in which she was instructed to bring him into Chaste, which is the catalyst for their conflicting views on violence and morality. At the end of season 2, Elektra sacrifices herself to save Matt. In The Defenders team-up miniseries, Elektra is resurrected by the Hand as the supervillain Black Sky.
"It's probably not Matt that says it. It's probably Elektra or someone, you know what I mean?... She's beaten him up, she's trying to kill him, she's got him arrested, she's done all sorts of things and he's always forgiven her, but she swears and he's like, 'That's it, it's over.' That he will not take."
Despite Daredevil’s beloved status and campaigns like #SaveDaredevil, Disney/Marvel Studios ended their relationship with Netflix/ABC in 2018 and canceled the Defenders universe. In the years that followed, fans were left to wonder if characters like Daredevil, Punisher, and Jessica Jones would ever officially become a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Following Cox and D’Onofrio’s MCU appearances, it was announced that Marvel’s Netflix shows would be leaving the streaming service at the end of February 2022. Last week, Disney announced that every season of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, The Punisher, The Defenders, and ABC’s Agents of Shield would become available to stream on Disney+ starting March 16, 2022.
