Here's a taste of what Ford's S650 Mustang GT3 race car sounds like.
As the mass of this racing engine brings the revs back down, the unmistakable sound of a whiny racing gearbox becomes audible. Two more rapid-fire downshifts are then knocked off before the V-8 really starts to push its way towards redline. The audio sounds like it was pulled during a lapping session of some kind, hinted at by the driver carefully waiting to give the throttle pedal a full-blown floorward jab.
