The city school district's administration voiced support Tuesday for putting police back in schools - albeit officers hired directly by the district and not by city hall.

“It’s a concern of mine, and I know it’s a concern of Mr. Turman here, is that school-to-prison pipeline,” Morris reiterated. “By having our own police department in-house, we can control in certain cases when to arrest and when to defer to other disciplinary measures” such as detention, suspension, and counseling.
“Sometimes things just go from A to Z quickly and there’s no time to deescalate or intervene,” Turman said, especially with conflicts that start outside of school and fester on social media, with school staff only finding out about them once a fight breaks out. However, several board members on Tuesday voiced general agreement with the notion that the district could avoid school-to-prison pipeline issues.
