It is time we stopped treating graffiti vandalism as a harmless prank and gave it the attention it deserves.
Graffiti vandalism, a crime once limited to commercial districts and urban areas of the Commonwealth, has emerged as a growing problem in rural areas. In a recent incident, vandals defaced some ancient boulders in a scenic area of geologic significance in the Poconos.
This area, known locally as Poplar Gap, is a member of a geologic unit known as the Catskill Formation, which dates back approximately 400 million years, extending from upstate New York all the way through the Poconos . This site should be protected as a geologic heritage site, not used as a canvas for vandals with cans of spray paint to “express themselves” by defacing public property and scenic wonders in our region.
Yet phone calls to the police, and to the township in which this crime occurred, met with a lukewarm response. Apparently, this kind of vandalism is not considered a crime unless it occurs on somebody’s property, leaving it to local communities using public funds to deal with this outrage. It is time we stopped treating graffiti vandalism as “mischief” or a harmless “prank” and gave it the attention it deserves as a serious crime impacting our environment, our economy, and the tourism industry in Pennsylvania. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
