Volunteer firefighters, county employees work as a team to extinguish it,

Volunteer fire companies from three counties were dispatched shortly at 11 p.m. Wednesday when a passerby saw an orange glow around the landfill along Route 15 near Montgomery, which is outside of Williamsport.

Tanker shuttles again were used to haul water about a mile from hydrants to the site of the fire where garbage had been dumped earlier in the day. The fire was declared out at 12:31 a.m. Thursday.Nighttime was a real challenge because landfill employees were using heavy equipment to move the garbage so it could be doused with water, he said.

It was not an extension or rekindling of the earlier fire, he said, noting about 3,600 tons of garbage had been dumped at the landfill since the first one. Eight tarps, each valued at $5,000, were destroyed in the first fire and several more in the second, he said. The tarps are used to cover the waste at the end of the day.
