Colleen Baker, Staff / Houston Chroniclehe’s going to do it. And if you don’t quite understand all the math and jargony tax code talk, the affable certified public accountant and longtime consultant for investors in the energy industry will make it real simple with a few water bottles or any other props within his grasp.
Astonishingly, they’ll likely get away with it, just like many other owners of large commercial and industrial properties across the state who— Collier estimates it’s at least $7.5 billion. Homeowners have to make that up in our tax bills. Why? Because of a simple loophole that lawmakers could fix if they wanted but won’t: the state of Texas doesn’t define what a “comparable” property is.
Patrick, a Republican former shock jock, loves drama and political theater much more than solving structural budget problems. He is the best choice in this race for GOP partisans who are attracted to the divisive issues he champions: censoring school libraries, harrassing trans athletes, banning abortion rights and sucking public education dry with school vouchers.
He was a Republican for most of his life until he says the GOP recruited him to run for Houston city controller years ago and then deemed him unqualified because he believed in a woman’s right to choose. Then, watching former Houston Mayor Bill White run for governor persauded him that moderate Democrats could be pragmatic and boardroom-consensus-builders, too.

These things, along with the overwhelming numbers of teachers leaving the profession and the vexing numbers of uninsured, have peeled back the “miracle” facade that Patrick and Gov. Greg Abbott try to portray of Texas.
