Many Texans do not have the means to afford treatment if they test positive for cancer. Legislation can change that.

on the epidemiology of colorectal cancer in the United States: of the more than 100,000 Americans diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year, 60 percent have advanced-stage cancer and 20 percent are younger than age 55.

Part of the reason behind these low screening rates is many Texans do not have the means to afford treatment if they test positive for cancer. But there are programs in place for men and women who don’t have insurance to receive free, at-home colorectal screening kits. Patterson expects to be cancer-free following surgery this spring. But while her story has a happy ending, many Texans that get screened still face challenges in paying for treatment if they screen positive. To improve these statistics and save lives, Texas must focus on what happens after screening, when a patient gets the devastating news that they have cancer.
