Late Padres Hall of Famer was eager for season's second game. Tony Gwynn Jr. says team chemistry matters, cites '10 club.

Opening day attracted many media folks who, like those who go to church only on Easter or Christmas, would not be returning to the Church of Baseball anytime soon.

“My dad wanted his normal days,” Tony Gwynn Jr. was saying Thursday afternnon at Petco Park, laughing the infectious Gwynn laugh, two hours before the Padres opened their 55th season in the big leagues. Padres officials are unlikely to limit tickets sales to Padres fans as effectively as they did for the two Dodgers games, but this seems clear: the Padres can expect vocal support across the next six months or more.I know that marks me as hopelessly Old School.

The players’ collective resolve to figure out how to win the day’s game, said several members, including World Series winners Dave Roberts and David Eckstein , was exceptional. Padres newcomer Matt Carpenter said team chemistry is a significant piece of any team’s puzzle. The season’s first roadtrip, he said, is a crucial launching point.
