This is the 50th straight year Carole Salazar and son, Vic, are attending the Padres home opener. Even during the pandemic fan ban, they stood outside Petco Park.

When news anchor Vic Salazar negotiated his contract at Bakersfield KGET TV in 1984-90, he insisted on permission to take off the Padres home opening day each year, so he could drive to San Diego to attend the game with his mother.

Today is a hallmark day. When 2007 Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy throws out the ceremonial first pitch, it will mark the mother-and-son attendees’ 50th straight year of opening day games. When asked what ignited their opening day passion, they credit the unusual excitement of the April 9, 1974, season kickoff.

In fact, seven years later when Carole and Gil were touring the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, N.Y., Gil noticed the date was wrong in its display documenting the trio of home runs and informed the museum. He soon got a letter thanking him for correcting the error.
