ICYMI: Read DaveWoods007's investigation of the lawsuit against Huntington University.

Stoffel was a star runner at Huntington North — fourth in the state at 1,600 meters in 2015 and third in 2016 — and initially enrolled at Indiana University. She said transition to the large campus was difficult, so she transferred to her hometown college and looked forward to being coached by Nick Johnson.

The track at Huntington University in Huntington, Ind. The successful distance running program at Huntington University has come under fire from former athletes.Stoffel called the injections The Experiment. She said the shots were given above the glute.“It was very clear not to talk about it,” Stoffel said. “I thought it was legit so didn’t feel a need to talk about it, either.”

Stoffel said the celebration grew awkward when Johnson brought the team together to reinforce the idea he was responsible for the national championship. Johnson’s bond with his team extended beyond self-aggrandizing boasts and often crossed the line for healthy coach-athlete relationships, according to several runners, the 2020 police report and the lawsuit. Johnson promoted the team as a family, and sometimes assumed a fatherly role.Hannah Stoffel, while at Huntington University, runs through a tunnel of spectators to win NAIA cross-country title at Vancouver, Wash., Nov. 22, 2019.

By the summer of 2020, Huntington North officials had grown concerned about activities of the local college coach. They met with Johnson to discuss potential recruiting violations and gossip “about the constant flow of students in and out of Mr. Johnson’s residence,” according to the police report. Hogshead-Makar, the CEO of ChampionWomen, said research by the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee has shown the more elite an athlete is, the more likely it is she will be abused by someone in her entourage. The likelihood of sexual abuse in a coach-athlete dynamic is greater than in almost any other relationship, she said, in part due to a necessary focus on the body that can quickly become sexualized.

“He just made it clear I wasn’t leaving the room until I got it,” Stoffel told IndyStar. “I had my ear buds, I put them in, turned them all the way up. I had a Beyonce song on. Just waited to give me four injections. Not even in the same place. Two were so high above the glute, it was almost my lower back. “That’s when I started crying. ‘He’s going to put this into my uterus.’ Then I just left, pretended it didn’t happen. I said 'no' so many times.

When she later told a Fort Wayne orthopedist about taking prednisone, the doctor asked where she got a prescription. Stoffel said she gave a vague reply and thought something must be wrong. The doctor prescribed a different medication for her Achilles’ tendon, recommending she not run. The league cross-country meet was Nov. 6, 2020, at Marion. Taylor defeated Huntington 50-53 for the women’s team title, despite a 1-2 finish by Wilson and Stoffel. As Stoffel struggled with the leg injury and pressure to submit to injections, she battled her coach over a different issue. She said Johnson tried to get close to her by divulging problems within his marriage. He also talked with her about problems from her childhood. And the coach was there to console her, Stoffel said.

“Apart from never consenting in the first place, I did verbally tell him 'no,' I told him to stop. And he didn’t. No matter what I did, he was just as relentless. It was humiliating,” she recalled. Stoffel said Johnson told her if she ever divulged what happened, “Lauren would light the town in flames.” At his request, Stoffel said she deleted text messages they exchanged. Stoffel regrets that now because it destroyed evidence that would have been helpful if she were not believed.
