The Delete Dixie Initiative says because of 'Dixie's' ties to the Confederacy, racial subjugation and a time of racial slavery and violence, they decided to call for change in Alabama's fight song.

The DDI site says, in 2013, Dr. Cassandra Simon and the Black Faculty and Staff Association sought to raise awareness on potentially removing the word from the fight song. On March 10, 2021, BFSA officially contacted the administration about the issue. “A series of meetings” began, including sessions with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Vice President; the Vice President of Student Affairs; and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee in the Athletics Department. The group never personally with UA President Stuart Bell but did with Chief Administrative Officer Chad Tindol and Director of Internal Affairs and UA System Liaison LeNá McDonald,” the group’s web site says.
“Dr. Simon and BFSA began spreading awareness to small groups and, in Fall of 2021, a group of students came together to form the beginnings of DDI.
