The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections on Tuesday denied the activists' requests for protest hearings involving several candidates, including former Cleveland City Councilman Jeff Johnson who is running for municipal judge and Cuyahoga.
, claiming those seeking the offices failed to gain the proper number of signatures needed to be on the November ballot.
Cleveland residents Jeffrey Mixson and Mariah Crenshaw sought hearings against Johnson and Sweeney, as well as Earl Turner, the longtime clerk of courts, and judicial candidates John Russo, Sydney Saffold, Heather McCollough and Jocelyn Conwell. Johnson and other candidates argued that the election falls under state law, which says only 50 signatures are needed to be placed on the ballot.
McCollough, Conwell and McCall agreed with Johnson. Johnson was a state senator who later served as a member of the Jane Campbell administration and was elected to Cleveland’s council. He also ran unsuccessfully for mayor. He is currently a magistrate for Cleveland Housing Court. Crenshaw said she plans to have the Ohio Supreme Court analyze the board’s decision, one that allows the candidates to remain on the ballot.
