Leading up to San Diego State’s Friday deadline to inform the Mountain West whether it plans to remain in the league in 2024-25, the Union-Tribune is looking back at the Aztecs’ conference history, the reasons behind a potential move and whether it makes sense. Today marks Part 1.

Back-to-back 10-1 seasons as an independent — and no bowl berths — in 1976-77 preceded SDSU’s conference return.Welcome to the WAC UTEP fans shouted “Welcome to the WAC” as the Aztecs left the field. They would finish 2-4 in the conference and 4-8 overall in 1978.
