Magoon Gwath planned to spend a post-grad season at Veritas Prep, but San Diego State saw him shooting 3s and snatched him up for the 2023-24 college season
San Diego State built its basketball program by unearthing overlooked, underrated talent, once starting a center who was cut from his high school team.On Sunday, they got a surprise commitment from Magoon Gwath, a 6-foot-11¾ post from Veritas Prep who has graduated high school and will be eligible immediately for the 2023-24 season. He could be on campus in two weeks.“He’s oozing with potential,” Veritas Prep coach George Zedan said, “just scratching the surface.
Gwath is the son of Sudanese immigrants who was born in the States, lived in the Dallas metroplex and attended his first three years of high school there. Veritas Prep’s Zedan saw a video of him online last summer and called his club coach to inquire. Zedan also is eminently familiar with SDSU’s program, having coached current Aztecs guard Lamont Butler and former Aztecs wing Matt Mitchell in AAU.
