We chat with TheHandmaidsTale star Ann Down about Aunt Lydia's journey in season 5, and how it lays the groundwork for her future role in The Testaments:
Aunt Lydia has always been one of The Handmaid's Tale's most fascinating characters thanks, in part, to Ann Dowd's riveting performance. After a tumultuous journey to recoup power in the previous season, The Handmaid's Tale season 5 sees Aunt Lydia back in charge of the Red Center and resuming her complicated relationship with Janine and now Esther, too.
Ann Dowd Talks The Handmaid's Tale I think the evolution of Aunt Lydia has been such an interesting one, this season more than ever. We see her begin to change into the Aunt Lydia we kind of know from the books. So what was the most exciting or rewarding part of exploring her this season? So much remains mysterious about her, but she's becoming more of a guardian over these women than ever before. How do you kind of find the shades of good in someone who, on paper like Lydia, seems so villainous?
I would say a lot of it when it comes to choosing violent behavior or not seeing what's in front of you comes from hurt from a childhood or whatever where you just had to shut those doors and keep your life on a narrow lane. And that's how you're safe. I think her devotion to God is real. I think what she thought Gilead was, it's becoming clear that it isn't. And so now what? And that's the journey for her that I find tremendously exciting.
