King’s leadership after injury set him apart

Texas A&M quarterback Haynes King will start the Aggie’s opener for the second straight season, beating out junior Max Johnson and freshman Conner Weigman.COLLEGE STATION — When Texas A&M quarterback Haynes King broke his leg last season in Week 2 against Colorado, he didn’t climb into a shell in the fall.

A&M coach Jimbo Fisher on Monday explained why he selected the sophomore King as his starting quarterback, as he also did a year ago against different competition. “We feel very comfortable with the other two quarterbacks,” Fisher said of the overall competition stretching from spring drills to August camp. “Max Johnson can be a starter here, and play very well, and so can Conner Weigman. … It took a while because you had guys who were matching each other.”

“If Lord willing happens you feel very comfortable in that situation,” Fisher said while knocking on a table of injury perhaps prompting him to turn to one or both of the backups. “As we last year, you definitely need ’em.” “He’s a winner — he definitely wants to win,” A&M receiver Ainias Smith said of King. “He’s matured a lot, in just trying to get everybody going … he’s not just a person who’s going to sit back and be quiet, he’s going to bring that inner leadership out .”
