Most of the state’s competitive races are concentrated in San Antonio and southward,...
U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, speaks as a delegation of members of Congress tour the Catholic Charities Humanitarian Respite Center on Saturday, July 13, 2019, in McAllen, Texas. Though victory margins for Texas Republicans at the top of the ballot have grown tighter in recent years, there are few competitive races this fall after the Legislature redrew the state’s political maps.
“Republicans see the idea to put Democratic candidates who have enjoyed a natural advantage in those areas on the defensive, and they’re doing so,” said Jim Henson, the director of the Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin. “They’re doing so by defending what gains they’ve made and trying to press Democrats — mainly in congressional but even in some legislative races in that region.
De La Cruz has raised $3 million — more money than the total of every GOP challenger who has sought the office since 2010, said Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston. The campaign messaging in the district largely aligns with national trends, with De La Cruz stressing border security and the economy under the Biden administration.
In the neighboring 28th District, Republican Cassy Garcia is hoping to unseat Rep. Henry Cuellar of Laredo, the most moderate Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives. Most of the debt is held by borrowers in the top 60 percent of income distributions, a recent study by the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School found, further fueling GOP criticism.
Now, Gonzales has established himself as a key member and young leader of the House GOP, even though he’s broken with the party at times to support bipartisan legislation on guns and same-sex marriage. The old 23rd District boundaries gave the GOP less than a 2 point advantage there, but Texas Republicans gave Gonzales some relief during the redistricting process. It’s a gap that still leaves the district within Democrat John Lira’s reach.
