CBS executives thought the special would fail for a multitude of reasons: children were casted to voice characters, it didn’t feature a laugh track, and its background music being jazz all contributed to a slow-paced storytelling style that viewers, at the time, had not been used to.“A Charlie Brown Christmas” went on to secure its TV showing as yearly tradition and nine years ago, nearly five decades later, it broke through another barrier – out of the TV screen and onto the stage.
The show is now 90 minutes long with a 20-minute intermission. All the beloved cartoon characters will be played by actors who sing and dance, rather than them being costumed. Musical classics from the show will be executed by a three-piece band on stage who, along with actors, will provide a concert after the performance where the audience can join in on the holiday classics in an interactive portion.
