Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday defended the job performance of senior leaders at the social media company, a day after laying off some 4,000 workers.

Zuckerberg told employees during a companywide meeting that while in general the Facebook parent company met “most” of its expectations last year, many top leaders also took on new and expanded roles, according to a recording of the call obtained by The Washington Post.

Among the executives that have been elevated over the last year include Susan Li, who became chief financial officer and Javier Olivan who assumed the role of chief operating officer,
