In 1981, Lamar Smith was a Texas state representative. Three years later, he would run and win a seat in Congress. A letter writer, who worked on his campaign, remembers it as a more politically polite time.In 1986, as press secretary on Lamar Smith’s original primary campaign for congressman, I almost served Van Archer, the former city councilman, a leather shoe.
Back then, politics had yet to cross into the wasteland of cruelty, meanness and zero-sum game. At the last minute, Smith decided against it because he is a gentleman.
