In August, troopers of the Texas Department of Public Safety escort migrants near Eagle Pass. A letter writer sees value in allowing people into the country while immigration reform is stalemated in the halls of government.Please, let’s just let them in. Let them walk across the bridge, screen and register them, and set them free. We need workers; they need work. They’ll either find their way to jobs around the country or jobs will find them.
Yes, this will lead to problems of logistics, assimilation, citizenship rights and fair taxation, but isn’t that what government does in a democracy? Resolve problems that accompany beneficial policy?Has public service now become only a handy venue for winning public office, the immigration problem still with us because both parties find it useful? Republicans for fanning our fears and Democrats for tugging at heartstrings? Is this why nothing happens? No bipartisan compromise, no immigration...
I still believe there are aspiring senators, representatives and governors who will work to pass this overdue legislation with the urgency of a swimmer churning for shore. On Election Day I will throw my rope out to politicians who have convinced me they will work hard to pass immigration reform.The GI Bill for veterans of World War II was not free. GIs paid for it by serving their country during a war.
I went to Incarnate Word College for two years and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. I had a combination of scholarships and loans, and I worked part time. After graduation, I paid off every penny of my student loans. Applying to medical schools, I had to take on loans again. The financial aid department was a lifesaver.
As another letter writer, Jesse Howell, said, taxpayer dollars are given to help corporations such as the airlines and banks. Why not students?
