A reader says that was pretty childish behavior, too.I felt the same way when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ripped apart the copy of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on television while he was still on the dais. Would she call that “adolescent behavior,” too?The teacher/substitute shortage is due to several reasons.
Teacher pay is always stated as a reason. Teacher safety is another issue — both health and physical safety. Gov. Greg Abbott did not care about teachers’ health when he rejected mask mandates and demanded a return to the classroom. Teachers had to perform double duty maintaining their in-class and virtual students for the same pay.
Teachers have little say in what or how they teach as parents object to what is being taught. Parents object when their child receives a low/failing grade for poor performance. School discipline has become more of a problem. Substitutes can earn more money with less hassle from students and administration by working part time elsewhere — even with the temporary raises districts have started. Substitutes get little support from the administration.
This has all happened under Abbott’s watch. Now he wants to set up a group of people to figure out why there is a critical teacher shortage. Is this about the shortage or the upcoming election for Abbott? Will something be done for the school system and not just political posturing?Unless the “L.B.” initials in Robert L.B. Tobin’s name stand for land bridge, this is the most incredible coincidence in world history.
