Unfortunately, however, I don’t have a lot of company in that opinion – particularly from the other side. Issue 1′s appearance on the ballot has thrown its opponents into a vituperative frenzy of hysteria far beyond anything I’ve ever seen in any election, local or national. Counting all the “anti” opinion pieces is beyond my willingness to revisit them, but you can find a list of our recent news storiesIt wasn’t difficult to count the “pro” Issue 1 opinion columns, though: One. From me.As I said above, there are reasonable arguments on each side. You’ll have no trouble finding anti-Issue 1 opinions, but let me tell you why I’m for it:
* Unlike legislation, every word of a constitutional amendment is chiseled in stone. It cannot be changed, withdrawn or restructured without another constitutional amendment. * Of course, the prescribed way to enact or change state laws is through the legislature, whose members are elected for that purpose.
* One of those 36 news stories on Issue 1 noted above listed all the amendments that would not be law in Ohio if the bar for amending the constitution had been higher – from minimum wage to women’s suffrage to civil rights issues and others.
