The Y-3 fall 2023 menswear collection is here. See every look:
Y-3’s fall collection started with an Adidas shoe sample. “It was made by scientists in a lab to try to improve the performance of an athlete—run faster, jump higher, increase propulsion,” explained Stefano Pierre Beruschi, head design director at Adidas Originals, partnerships and Y-3, in a meeting in Paris. “And it succeeded to the point where it’s kind of illegal. So it just sat on a shelf. But I said, ‘That shelf-sitter deserves to be in fashion.
The shoe, known internally as the “Power Plate,” was taken to a meeting with Yohji Yamamoto’s team, with whom Adidas has collaborated on the diffusion line Y-3 for the last 20 years. “Immediately, ideas started springing between the Japanese team and our team. It’s the perfect emblem of what we’re doing: we’re a sports brand working with performance materials; they’re artisanal pattern ninjas, with the legacy of Yohji Yamamoto,” enthused Beruschi.
The revised shoe, which sports a curved blade of a sole on top of which sits a leather sneaker adapted from the Superstar design, certainly adds oomph to a collection that’s big on volumes and lots of geeky details sportswear fans will love: hidden pockets in hems and collars; acid-treated Primeknit layers; drawstrings that allow for radical restyling of quilted jackets and skirts.
Beruschi, an affable Canadian with Balenciaga, Bally and Vivienne Westwood on his resume, has been working on Y-3 collections since 2019, but this season constitutes something of a subtle reboot of Adidas’s longest-running link-up.
