Argentina beat Croatia, 3-0, in a World Cup semifinal, moving to within one win of its first world championship since 1986. The Argentine side beat the 2018 runner-up to advance to its 6th final, in which it will face either France or Morocco on Sunday.
Argentina leads Croatia 2-0 at halftime of their semifinal match at Lusail Stadium on the strength of Lionel Messi’s penalty kick goal and Julián Álvarez’s breakaway tally five minutes later.
Messi’s fifth goal of the tournament came after Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic took out Álvarez in the box. Livakovic, who made 11 saves in Croatia’s quarterfinal win over Brazil, guessed right but couldn’t get to Messi’s blast into the upper right corner of the net. Álvarez scored his third goal in Qatar on a terrific individual effort in the 39th minute. Off a Croatia corner kick, the ball found itself on the Manchester City forward’s foot just before midfield. He maintained possession, dribbling between multiple Croatian defenders, before reaching the box and flicking a shot past Livakovic. Croatia is still looking for its first shot on target.
