France will face Argentina in World Cup final after eliminating Morocco in semifinal
In its sixth game of this World Cup, Morocco finally looked rattled. It only took the defending champion to do it.
Theo Hernández’s leaping fifth-minute volley gave France a 1-0 lead that held up for the rest of the half, and Morocco was lucky to be down only the single goal. Olivier Giroud hit the post later in the half, and France had two strong chances in the 36th minute, but Kylian Mbappé’s close-range shot was cleared away and a wide-open Giroud missed wide of the net.
The upstart Atlas Lions looked to be discombobulated on defense at the start after an injury aggravated during warmups sent projected starter Nayef Aguerd to the bench just before kickoff. France’s goal, and the chances that followed, were the result of some defensive lapses from a team that had not surrendered a goal to an opposing player during the tournament .
