FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Workers from across ten departments at the West Fairbanks Fred Meyer store voted to unionize on Friday, June 23.The workers joined the United Food And Commercial Workers Local 1496, which represents over 2,400 workers in the State of Alaska. The union already represents workers in the grocery, deli, bakery, produce, starbucks, liquor, and meat and seafood departments at West Fairbanks Fred Meyer.
Local 1496 is opposed to the merger, which is currently under review by the FTC. They say it would raise prices for consumers, threaten food security and supply chains, close stores, and diminish worker’s wages and benefits.
