A woman facing child abuse charges turned herself in to police Friday after authorities said her injured child had to be flown from north Alabama to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham last week for life-saving surgery.

Albertville Fire Department Medics responded to the 2000 block of Alabama 205 North on a call of a child having difficulty breathing, Albertville police said Friday. Carmen Casanova, the child’s mother, was carrying her unconscious child outside of the home as medics arrived and said the child was involved in an accident, police said.The child was then flown to Children’s to undergo life-saving surgery.
Medical personnel determined the child was not involved in an accident as Casanova claimed, and an arrest warrant was issued for Casanova on aggravated child abuse charges.She is expected to be transferred to the Marshall County Jail on $250,000 bond.
