In a Summer League game featuring teams that picked first and second in last June's draft, Spurs second-rounder Sidy Cissoko stole the spotlight with defense
Spurs second-round draft choice Sidy Cissoko shows off his defensive ability against the Hornets' James Bouknight during Monday's game in the California Classic summer league.SACRAMENTO — Spurs summer league coach Matt Neilsen did not have a photo of Charlotte rookie Brandon Miller plastered on the wall of the locker room at Golden1 Arena.
That mantra was on display in the Spurs’ 98-77 victory over the Hornets, which served as the NBA indoctrination for a pair of rookies selected 42 picks apart. Miller found his way to 18 points Monday, but most of it came after the Spurs had already run off with the game. Credit Cissoko, who did not back down from the toughest defensive assignment summer league had to offer.
It was the first on-court action for the 22-year-old Champagnie since agreeing to a four-year, $12-million full NBA contract last week.Cissoko, meanwhile, found a way to put his imprint on the game without scoring a field goal. He ended with three points, all on foul shots. Charlotte fans can take heart in Miller’s rugged debut, which he ended with seven fouls and six turnovers and only five made field goals.
